When the sergeant knocks on her door

When the sergeant knocks on her door

Hunter Blas

Issue No. 18 • Spring 2017

When the sergeant knocks on her door he's polite and proper. He rambles on about how the extension of the airport will be good for the economy. Something about bringing in more jobs, more opportunity for the people. She isn't listening to his pitch. She's mostly thinking about how she knew this was coming. She's flashing back to stories from her grandfather. He would tell her about the different crops and farm animals they had across the 75 acres that belonged to the Cudi clan. All those acres they tended to before they knocked on his door and demanded 3/4 of them. Now they were back for the last quarter. She sighs, let's him in, and knows any trace of her family's history would be lost once the first plane hit the new tarmac.
