Some ideas from Anne Fernald:

Guernica: Matt Petronzio blogs there. I have done & hope to do more. I'm not sure how we can partner with them, but our missions are similar and Guernica began at Fordham.

Girls Write Now: This is a great NYC nonprofit that pairs professional women writers with girls who are students in NYC high schools. It's a big sister relationship based in creative writing. The girls are supposed to try to get published and try to read publicly as part of their training. They win all kinds of Scholastic awards every year. I'm not sure if their writings would get accepted, but it's worth a try and, if something did get in, it'd be great publicity for both. Lots of really dynamic NYC women writers are linked to this group, so that's another reason to make sure they see our name and know what we're up to.

Some ideas from Kim Naples:

Some ideas from Sarah Grimm

To emphasize the "action" aspect of CURA, we could get in touch with some of Fordham's outreach programs.  If a few of them could reach out about CURA via their listserves, we would reach a wide and diverse audience.  The Dorothy Day Center for Service and Justicesends out weekly emails and would probably be happy to include CURA in them.

In one way or another, most of Fordham's Global Outreach projects deal with home.  GO has a big network of students, alumni, and activists who would likely be very responsive to this year's theme.  Some GO teams may even be interested in attending or advertising our crane-making parties for their own team-building and community outreach.

Ideas from Brianna O'Connor

I've e-mailed my contacts in the following departments within Fordham:

Theresa Murphy from Global Outreach (I also asked her to forward the e-mail to Paul Francis, who is the head of GO for both campuses)

Vincent DeCola, the first year experience dean

Sarah Dougan, the admissions councilor who runs the Lincoln Center Society

Marsha Sommervil from the Office of Multicultural Affairs. OMA is also starting a new program this year called the Multicultural Action Council. They describe it as a type of UN for Fordham's socially engaged student groups. I went to a meeting today as a representative for another club but of course plugged CURA, and they seemed excited to have us come on board! I'll keep everyone updated as I find out more information about that.

Hopefully I will add to this list in the coming week!

I have reached out to the following social media outlets:

Newyorican Poets Cafe Facebook Page: Facebook followers of the famous Newyorican Poets Cafe. Over 20,000 followers nation wide.

Fordham Transfers Facebook Page: Fordham Transfer Students Facebook page where ideas and upcoming events are frequently shared among current Transfer Students.

Fordham Club Facebook Page: Current Fordham students and Alumni who were involved in Fordham Club, an exclusive academic club for Fordham seniors dedicated to public service and student life.

Template Submission Email for Organizations Outside of Fordham

Dear _____,

Fordham University's first national literary magazine, CURA: A Literary Magazine of Art and Action is now accepting submissions.  Content is published in print and in online and Kindle editions.  Our website is http://www.curamag.com  We would love to see submissions from [Insert Name of Group Here].

CURA is a multi-media initiative committed to integrating the arts and social justice. Featuring creative writing, visual art, new media and video in response to current news, we seek to enable an artistic process that is rigorously engaged with the world at the present moment.

This year our theme is "Home," in light of our partnership with Covenant House, a childcare agency providing food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and essential services to homeless and runaway children. All publication proceeds will directly benefit Covenant House. During the months of October, November, February and March, CURA will post creative prompts online based on current news on the theme of "Home." Multi-media submissions in response to these prompts will therefore be driven by events and experiences at the present moment resulting in writing, visual art new media and video that is not only relevant, but vital.  We also welcome submissions that are based, in some way, on the theme of "Home."  We look forward to receiving responses to "Home" as evocative, vast and rich as the term itself.

We seek to foster a movement of creative response guided by concrete and meaningful action-- to celebrate informed and active citizenship where a republic of writers, filmmakers, visual and digital artists converge. What Martín Espada has written about the social responsibility of the “Republic of Poetry” we believe applies to a Republic of all the Arts. It is “a place where creativity meets community, where the imagination serves humanity. [It] is a republic of justice because the practice of justice is the highest form of human expression.”

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
